Welcome to Worship Therapy!

Worship has been an important part of my healing journey.  On this weekly podcast,  I’ll be sharing songs and artists who have impacted my life with their gifts.

This week we will discuss breaking free from fear. Are you done with fear whispering lies to keep you afraid and bound? If so, today’s worship podcast is for you.  It’s time we stop welcoming fear into our lives and forcefully tell it to go.

WORSHIP

Our featured song is The Breakup Song by Francesca Battistelli

Lyrics:

Sick and tired of being sick and tired
Had of much of you as I can take
I’m so done, so over being afraid
I’ve gone through the motions
I’ve been back and forth
I know that you’re thinking you’ve heard this before
I don’t know how to say it
So I’m just gonna say it

Chorus:

Fear, you don’t own me
There ain’t no room in this story
And I ain’t got time for you
Telling me what I’m not
Like you know me well guess what?
I know who I am
I know I’m strong
And I am free
Got my own identity
So fear, you will never be welcome here

Take a minute, let it settle in
You probably never saw it coming
Something’s gotta give so I give up you, oh
There’s no room for you here
Yeah, I’ve had enough
No vacancy sign on my heart is lit up
In case you didn’t hear it
Here it is again

Chorus

Is there anybody out there just like me?
Anybody needing fear to leave?
If you don’t know how to say it
Sing along with me

Sing fear, you don’t own me
There ain’t no room in this story
And I ain’t got time for you
Telling me what I’m not
Like you know me well guess what?
I know who I am
I know I’m strong, brave
And I am free
Got my own identity
So fear, you will never be welcome here
Oh, goodbye, goodbye fear
You will never be welcome here

WORD OF GOD

Read Isaiah 41: 10-13

This passage share God’s desire to help us overcome fear:

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. ~ Isaiah 41:10

For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. ~ Isaiah 41:13

Now consider the words of The Breakup Song. Both fear and courage are choices. We must choose to breakup with fear. Knowing who you are and understanding the truth about what God says about you are both necessary for anyone wanting to overcome a stonghold of fear in their life.

Today’s Therapy Session

  1. How well does fear know you? Do you spend hours telling fear about your worries and your doubts? Do you meditate on your fears and rehearse its lies throughout the day? Have you rolled out the welcome mat and invited fear to come take a seat on the throne of your heart? I know these questions can sound harsh, but this is what many of us do without intending to do so. We allow fear a place in our lives. A place it does not deserve and one it will use to contaminate all other areas of our life. What is it you fear most? What lie has the deepest roots? Identify it, then let’s start uprooting what needs to go.
  2.  At the end of The Breakup Song, you are invited to sing-along with the artist. If you did not do this the first time you listened to the song, I encourage you to play it again and sing these words out loud “Fear, you don’t own me. There ain’t no room in this story. And I ain’t got time for you telling me what I’m not. Like you know me. Well, guess what? I know who I am. I know I’m strong, brave and I am free. Got my own identity. So fear, you will never be welcome here. Goodbye fear.”  Fear will fill your life with all the things you don’t want, leaving no room in your story for the things you desire. To live your best life, you must choose courage over fear. Having courage does not mean fear will just magically leave you alone. No, having courage means fear can no longer hold you back. You will continue to grow and expand. Your story will be open to receive the blessings, opportunities, and open doors awaiting you. As you walk past the fear and into the endless possibilities available with God, what would you like to say to it? Share your parting words with fear then move past it into your courageous future.
